One of the most beloved Afrikaans writers: that's what Audrey Blignault was to a few generations of readers. And she still is. Evidence of this is the fact that her book of collected letters was a best-seller, published in 2008 by Hemel en See Publishers; a second print run had to be produced quickly after just a few months. But most of her collections of essays, selected from years of contributions to the magazine Sarie, are now out of print.
This collection of works has been selected by Audrey's daughter, Marié Heese, with a particular purpose: to be as close as possible to an autobiography. The search for essays that tell Audrey's life story in her own words has yielded a remarkable result. Spread out through the nine collections selected from her Sarie contributions, written and published over a few decades, Audrey really wrote her life story herself.
Along with some of her stories in Dit reën rose, the reader can follow and share in her experience: her childhood in Bredasdorp; her student days, first marriage, motherhood and extended travels; the depression of her recovery after the terrible accident in which her first husband died; time living alone; her second marriage; the sometimes disconcerting experience of being a grandmother; the awareness of the grip of time that no one can avoid. Along with the characteristic zest for life that also radiates from this collection, the reader also experiences a darker side of Audrey's life, and eventually discovers a renewed appreciation for the unquenchable passion for life that was her trademark.
